Martec: Cloud Cost Optimisation and Security Uplift Through Managed Operations on AWS

About Martec

The Martec is an Australian SaaS company delivering content intelligence and marketing technology solutions to enterprise clients. Operating in a fast-moving digital marketing landscape, Martec’s platform supports large organisations in managing and distributing content at scale. As Martec has grown, so has the complexity of its AWS environment and with it, the need for expert operational oversight to ensure the platform remains secure, efficient, and cost-effective.

Business Challenge

As Martec scaled its platform to serve enterprise clients, the team made a deliberate decision to raise the bar on their cloud operations. Cost efficiency was the initial focus: they wanted greater visibility and control over their AWS spend as the environment grew. But their ambitions extended further. Serving large organisations comes with expectations around security and resilience, and Martec wanted an AWS environment that could meet those expectations confidently.

To do that well, they needed a partner with deep AWS expertise to assess the environment objectively and implement improvements at pace. DNX conducted an initial assessment that gave Martec a clear picture of where their infrastructure stood and what a best-practice environment should look like. That assessment identified opportunities across both cost and security: some workloads and resources could be optimised or consolidated, and the network architecture had room to be tightened, particularly around how EC2 instances and RDS databases were segmented and accessed.

For a SaaS business with enterprise clients, getting ahead of these things proactively is exactly the right move. Security posture is increasingly a commercial consideration; the organisations Martec serves expect their vendors to operate with the same rigour they apply internally. Martec’s decision to address both cost and security together, rather than treating them as separate workstreams, set the engagement up to deliver lasting value rather than short-term savings alone.

Partner Solution

DNX engaged Martec under a Cloud Operations framework, delivering structured managed services across incident management, security management, Cloud monitoring, and continual service improvement. Governance is a key pillar of this approach, with a dedicated Cloud Service Delivery Manager ensuring that SLAs are met, priorities are correctly managed, and escalations are handled promptly

The first priority was gaining a clear understanding of the environment. DNX conducted a comprehensive assessment of Martec’s AWS footprint, identifying both security exposures and cost inefficiencies that had emerged as the platform scaled.

From a security perspective, DNX restructured the network by introducing private environments and isolating critical workloads from public access. Workloads that had been publicly exposed were moved into this new private structure. Firewall rules were reviewed and strengthened across the environment, removing overly open configurations that had accumulated over time and reducing overall risk.

In parallel, DNX initiated a targeted cost optimisation program. Underutilised resources that were contributing to unnecessary spend without delivering operational value were identified and removed. In addition, eligible workloads were migrated to AWS Graviton3 (ARM-based) processors, improving compute efficiency and lowering the overall cost profile of the environment.

To support ongoing operations, DNX deployed proactive monitoring and alerting across Martec’s AWS environment using cloud-native solutions, including Amazon CloudWatch, AWS GuardDuty, and AWS Security Hub, alongside Plerion as a third-party Cloud-Native Application Protection Platform (CNAPP). Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM) was implemented to provide continuous visibility into the health, compliance, and security posture of the platform, with structured alerting and escalation paths for any security incidents.

The managed service operates under a defined SLA framework, providing 24/7 support for critical and high business-impact incidents, a structured ITIL-aligned ticketing process, and regular service delivery reviews to ensure that the environment continues to meet Martec’s evolving operational and security requirements.

Results and Benefits

The engagement delivered measurable improvements across both of Martec’s goals: cloud cost efficiency and security posture.

Cost optimisation:

  • Monthly AWS spend decreased from $8,431 in April 2025 to $6,812 by June 2025, a reduction of approximately 19%
  • From June 2025 through February 2026, costs held broadly stable at an average of $7,143 per month, demonstrating that savings were sustained rather than temporary

Security posture:

  • AWS Foundational Security Best Practices score improved from 66% to 81%
  • CIS AWS Foundations Benchmark score improved from 21% to 86%
  • 10 publicly exposed resources were identified and resolved: 3 EC2 instances, 2 Lambda functions, 4 ElastiCache nodes, and 1 RDS instance

With these foundations in place, Martec’s internal team can focus on building and scaling their platform rather than managing infrastructure risk. The security posture Martec now maintains is one that enterprise clients can scrutinise with confidence.

The outcome of the engagement was an AWS environment that addressed both of Martec’s core needs: a materially reduced operational cost base and a significantly stronger security posture. By moving critical workloads into private subnets, removing publicly exposed databases and compute instances, and establishing ongoing managed operations, Martec now has the infrastructure controls expected by enterprise clients and the operational coverage to maintain them.
